Yankees provide extra security for the game after a garbage dump mess

The Yankees are taking steps to avoid a repeat of the ugliness that happened at the end of Saturday’s game in the Bronx.

There will be extra security at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon when the Yankees host the Guardians, a team spokesman said. About an hour before the first pitch Sunday, one guard appeared to be stationed in the front row of seats in right field and another in the section next to the Guardians’ bullpen in left center field.

At the end of the ninth inning on Saturday, tensions between the outside fans and the Guardians escalated, leading to beers and trash being thrown onto the field as the Yankees celebrated their walk-off victory.

The chaotic situation began after Cleveland’s Steven Kwan ran into the left field wall while trying to catch Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s game-changing double. While Kwan was being tended to by a coach and manager, Terry Francona, Guardians midfielder Myles Straw climbed the wall to come face to face with a fan who he said had mocked Kwan.

Then, after Gleyber Torres hit a walk-off single that Straw and right fielder Oscar Mercado were chasing near the warning lane, fans began throwing beers and trash onto the field in their direction.

Both teams then ran into right field, with the Yankees trying to urge their fans to calm down and stop throwing things.

After the game, Straw called the Yankees fans “the worst fan base in the world.”

“I mean, that’s an emotional reaction to the moment,” Aaron Boone said Sunday. “I certainly understand that, but I would disagree.”
