Young Russian hockey player found dead

A 21-year-old Russian attacker was found dead on June 23 in Ryazan, a suburb of Moscow, Russia.

According to several Russian media, he fell from the 18th floor of an apartment building. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of death and whether it was a suicide.

Savin played for Vityaz Podolsk. In 2022, he notably played 13 games in Russia’s top division, the KHL.

Last week, a former KHL star suddenly died at the age of just 44. The causes of his death were not disclosed ten days after the tragedy.

Dmitry Tarasov played in the KHL for 18 years, much of it at club Khabarovsk (HC Amur), where he was captain.

These names add to a sad and long list of Russian ice hockey players who have died prematurely in recent years.

A month ago, Le Journal chronicled the case of 30 Russian players who died under unclear circumstances, including a heart attack aged 22, poisoning, drowning, disappearance and death in their sleep.

If the Russian mafia was responsible for hockey-related murders in the late 1990s, the death tide that has continued since then has raised questions about player safety.
