Georgie Cooper is officially a dad! During Thursday’s Young Sheldon, Mandy gave birth to their daughter — a precious “niblingo” named Constance.
Ahead of the bundle of joy’s arrival, the prequel Big Bang Theory delivered a dramatic George and Mary moment across two seasons, which you can read more about here. The second half of our Q&A with Executive Producer Steve Holland, which you can read below, focuses solely on the baby and the future of new parents Georgie and Mandy.
TVLINE | I have to be honest: I was hoping the Alice Cooper name would stick.
[Laughs] That was pretty awesome.
TVLINE | Were there any other names you considered before deciding on Konstanz?
We’ve thrown around a lot, but Meemaw has done so much for Mandy since she got pregnant. Georgie too, but Meemaw really was the one who was there for her, so it seemed like a really cute nod to Meemaw.
TVLINE | I can’t imagine naming the baby after Georgie’s grandmother, which suits Mandy’s mother Audrey well. And their relationship is already quite strained….
I don’t think it helps! Your relationship fluctuates in small steps [toward] something better, but it’s going to be a long journey. It’s no fun when they fix their relationship in one episode and everyone is happy. And we want to keep Mandy with Meemaw for now, so a little tension with her parents is good for us.
TVLINE | Speaking of Mandy’s parents… In Season 2, Georgie had a part-time job at the Herschel Sparks tire store. You’ve since lost Billy Gardell to Bob Hearts Abishola, but you’ve introduced McCallister Auto & Tire. Can we read anything into the future if Dr. Tire run another tire shop nearby?
I would! [Laughs]
TVLINE | We didn’t actually see a baby in this episode. And on The Big Bang Theory, Howard and Bernadette’s kids were kept off screen until the series finale. Does Constance also remain in the off?
We can’t get away with that on this show! As much as I wasn’t looking forward to it, we’ve had a lot of babies on set over the past few months. We shot the first episode with a baby before Christmas, then the holiday break came, then we couldn’t use the same baby because the next episode was right after [the next] one, and the baby was now a month older. A month is a long time for a newborn, so many babies come to us. I was concerned about this but honestly the babies were great. They were kinda fun to shoot with…knock wood! This could go wrong at any moment!
TVLINE | You said you didn’t want to do a traditional birth order because it’s been done a thousand times before. How are you going to avoid making episodes about Georgie and Mandy as first-time parents that have also been made a thousand times?
Georgie and Mandy’s relationship is in such a strange place, which gave us a slightly different approach to it. They never actually dated. They did for a while, then she got pregnant, and then they stopped talking. Then they kind of got closer and she pushed him away, then she told him to start dating other women. I think it’s an interesting fold. They are trying to figure out how to become new parents and are also trying to figure out what their relationship is like with each other.
TVLINE | The elephant in the room is that Georgie is still 17. But we have to get closer to his 18th birthday. Are we addressing his official entry into adulthood before the end of the season?
We do! His birthday is an episode
