Just a day after announcing that the seventh season of Young Sheldon would debut on Thursday, February 15 at 8 p.m., CBS announced that the show would end after this season.
The Big Bang Theory spin-off, starring Iain Armitage as the young genius Sheldon Cooper, played by Jim Parsons on CBS’s The Big Bang Theory, will air its hour-long series finale on Thursday, May 16 at 8 p.m.
The upcoming season is the last of a three-year renewal that CBS announced for the sitcom back in 2021.
The upcoming season will consist of 14 episodes, with Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, praising the show in a statement.
“A prequel to one of the greatest comedies, Young Sheldon proved that lightning can strike twice,” Reisenbach began.

“It featured a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the moment we saw them on screen, bringing the characters to life with unique, heartfelt stories that captivated audiences from the start pulled,” she added.
She then thanked creators/executive producers Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro, as well as executive producer Steve Holland “and the entire writing and production team for six wonderful seasons.”
“We look forward to seeing her final season and giving her a proper send-off with the best episodes yet for her fans to enjoy,” she concluded.
“It was a wonderful experience telling the origins of Sheldon Cooper and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family,” said executive producers Steve Holland, Steven Molaro and Chuck Lorre in a joint statement.
“We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of The Coopers over the past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we are excited to share this final season with you,” they concluded.
Released in 2017, the series follows young Sheldon as he grows up in the small fictional town of Medford, Texas, and grapples with unique intellectual gifts that most of the adults around him don’t come close to possessing.
The series also stars Zoe Perry as Sheldon’s religious, religious mother Mary and Lance Barber as Sheldon’s football coach father George Sr. Montana Jordan as Sheldon’s brother Georgie, Raegan Revord as Sheldon’s fraternal twin sister Missy and Annie Potts as her grandmother Connie, affectionately known as Meemaw.
Jim Parsons also serves as the series’ executive producer and also serves as the series’ narrator.

The series is described by the network as a “consistent ratings winner” and debuted as Best New Comedy for the 2017-2018 season.
In 2019 and 2020, the season following the end of The Big Bang Theory’s 12 seasons, it became the top comedy series on all of television.
The show was once again the top comedy series for the 2022-2023 TV season, with 11 million viewers in live plus 35 viewers, including the broadcast five weeks after the original broadcast.
The series will also stream on Paramount Plus every Thursday night after premiering on CBS and is also available on the CBS website and app.
