Modern cars are filled with technology. Your average new cars are loaded with enough circuitry, sensors, and software to make a server farm blush, though this electrification will only get worse in the future. On Friday, Volvo announced that it is investing in a new technology center in central Stockholm to stay one step ahead.
The Swedish automaker’s spending will expand its current location and create jobs for more than 700 people, including software engineers, data scientists, analysts, product managers and others. Volvo needs so many high-tech experts because it wants to sell at least half of its cars online and develop at least half of its own software by the middle of this decade, ambitious goals for a relatively small company like this. .
Volvo casts a wide net here, seeking to attract people from all over the world. “People with the right competencies and values matter to our ambitions, which is why we are building our new technical center in Stockholm,” said Hanna Fager, Head of Corporate Functions at Volvo, in a press release provided by the carmaker. The Swedish capital is already home to several top-notch tech firms, and the automaker is likely hoping this halo effect will help it attract the people it needs.
But apart from software development and online sales, Volvo also wants to provide a world-class car ownership experience, which is another reason to expand its operations in Stockholm. More people can help an automaker better manage its products, improve design, and improve vehicle usability.
The Volvo Technical Center workspace will be updated later this year. In addition to vehicle development, the facility will also serve as the company’s base in the Stockholm area.
