Yovngchimi: “Everyone has rhythm within them”

Representing the history of his surroundings and others he imagines in his texts is one of the tasks that urban artist Yovngchimi values most. A wealth of experience inspires him to create stories that he knows how to capture in the urban genre and that have already made him the protagonist of millions of downloads on the most important music platforms in his young career.

When, as a 28-year-old, he thinks about the reach he has gained since his success with the single Glizzy’Walk, he analyzes it with a certain shyness. “I say that everyone carries the rhythm within themselves, as everyone can, but it’s good, it’s twenty again,” replied the artist, who is best known for the sounds of trap and drill. “Not everyone dares, and not everyone trusts talent,” he continues, pointing out that it takes much more than just the desire to achieve excellence.

His interest in music had been with him for a long time, but it wasn’t until he was 18 that he started to get more involved with it. His talent in basketball even led him to receive a scholarship to a university in California, but the passion wasn’t enough to convince him to take the sports route. “I came from out there,” he revealed about his decision to return, which came shortly after he moved from California to New York.

“I saw the movement that was there, which was a lot of music and a lot of talent, and little kids opening doors with music, and when I saw that movement and the people around me telling me that my music was hard “I was motivated to try it,” explained Yovngchimi, who is preparing for his presentation on October 7 at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in Puerto Rico.

In his list of collaborations he collects names such as De La Ghetto, Arcángel, Eladio Carrión, Villano Antillano, Ñengo Flow, Mora, Young Miko and Anuel AA, to name just a few. Although he has dealt with commercial themes, mischief appears in most of his compositions.

“In addition to my upbringing, my strength is that it is easier to write down the environment we were in and the things that happened. It’s a little easier there. If I had lived a loving life, I would write a song about love or heartbreak (laughs). That’s why in reality I’ve always been busking,” emphasized San Juan native Ángel Javier Avilés Monzón.

“My family comes from (Luis) Llorens (Torres), but I grew up in other hamlets in Santurce overall. I also lived in (Fray Bartolomé de) las Casas,” he explained, emphasizing the purpose of motivation. “It is also like a message of improvement that one can also bear good fruit in this environment, and that is with music.” Part of his wish is realized through his record label Glizzy Gvng, with which he wants to direct the aspirations of new people who are interested in the path of music.

“I really like what is being done with my movement, not only me as an artist, but also as a company and my work team. Everyone develops the way they should and I want to not only advance my career as much as possible, but also develop the company by helping and signing other kids.”

The voice of hits like Baby Father 2.0 and Baby Glock shared that the “Chimi” in his stage name comes from the nickname his grandfather gave him since he was a child. Yovng’s cause is a way to attract the attention of the Anglo-Saxon market, “like monopolizing the American world,” he said, clarifying that he has worked on issues in English.

His most recent song is Baby, which he worked on with Lunay. “It’s a busy and commercial song. I knew it was a good combination with Lunay. The topic is difficult and there are a lot of people talking about it. Now it’s breaking.” The single will be part of his next album, expected to be released this year, which will include songs such as QEPDC (with Ñengo Flow) and Full Of Diamonds.

One of the commitments that he is very excited about is his show at Choliseo in October. Even though he managed to dominate this scenario as a guest, it is now his turn as a protagonist. “I have visited different large coliseums and different artists, Eladio Carrión, Myke Towers, Arcángel, big events, lots of people, sold out.” I have seen the support, the euphoria as a guest and the welcome they give me. Thanks to these reactions, I have gained confidence that we are moving forward,” he explained. “I have a few artists, some tough people,” he said, declining to name names, explaining his plans to go on an artist tour in 2023.

Among the pleasant experiences he has had in his career is participating with Bad Bunny and Arcángel in the song La ruta during the presentation on the roof of a gas station on Loíza Street in San Juan in December 2022.

“That was for the moment,” he recalled enthusiastically. “Loíza Street is right next to Llorens. “We were in the farmhouse, I also have the studio there where I record music,” he said, summing up the surprising invitation that came from a member of his work team. “We had seen that they were preparing it, but we thought it was for a video because we knew Bad Bunny and Arcángel were doing a video. We started there in a motorboat because we couldn’t get into the car. I climbed onto the roof with them. It was a good experience. We separated. I met Bad Bunny for the first time. I sang The Route with Arcángel. “It wanted to fall,” he cheered about the audience’s reaction.

Personally, he showed how enthusiastic he is as the proud father of Amira Liz. “It makes me think about things a little more. But I really enjoy it,” he said of the seven-month-old little girl who brings a smile to his face just by mentioning her name. “She is very pretty,” he emphasized.
