Rio Singer Zeca Pagodinho received an honor this Saturday morning (23) in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense. The bronze statue, created by artist Marcos André Sales, was placed in a square in Xerém, where the samba singer has had a home since the 90s.

The event, which began at 11 a.m., also included the inauguration of a bridge over the João Pinto River and Rua Jessé Gomes da Silva, the musician’s father, who died in 2015. The honors were organized by the Caxias City Hall, the government of Rio, and the samba school Acadêmicos do Grande Rio.

Zeca’s connection to the community where he lived and raised his children became the storyline of this year’s Carnival parade. Grande Rio took 6th place with the samba “Ô Zeca, o pagode, where is it? I walked barefoot, cart and train, looking for Xerém, to see you, to hug you, to drink and drum.”

Zeca Pagodinho, known for his distinctive voice and infectious charisma, has gained countless fans throughout his successful career. His career led him to become a samba icon and an ambassador of Rio culture around the world. The lifesize monument is 1.80 meters high and is worth R$61,000.

Xerém, which is honored in several of the samba singer’s songs, is also the stage of the Instituto Zeca Pagodinho, founded in 1999, which offers free courses in music, gastronomy, cinema and ecotherapy for children with disabilities.
