Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered an impassioned speech to the Canadian Parliament on Tuesday urging them to put more economic and military pressure on Russia as it continues its invasion of Ukraine.

“Justin, can you imagine that you and your kids hear all these big explosions, airport bombing, Ottawa airport bombing?” Zelensky told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about this. “Cruise missiles are falling and your kids are asking you, ‘What happened?’

Zelenskiy called on the Canadian government to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine to help protect Ukrainian forces from Russian jets.

“Please close the sky, close the airspace,” he said. “Please stop bombing. How many more cruise missiles have to fall on our cities before you do that?”

“Dear Justin, dear guests. Can you imagine that every day you receive memos about the number of victims, including women and children? Zelensky added. “You heard about the explosions. We currently have 97 children who died during this war.”

Zelenskiy mentioned British wartime leader Winston Churchill when he told the UK Parliament last week that his country would fight Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’s cities to the end. Zelenskiy was also scheduled to address members of the US House and Senate on Wednesday, an event that would be broadcast live to the public.

Canadian legislators gave him two standing ovations before he even spoke.

“Can you imagine if the famous CN Tower in Toronto was hit by Russian bombs?” he said. “This is our reality.”

A video of Zelensky wearing a green military T-shirt and sweater was projected on large screens in the Canadian Parliament. He thanked Canada for humanitarian and military support and called the country a true ally.

Zelenskiy’s call for a no-fly zone came on the same day that the White House warned that the move “could provoke a war with Russia.”

“It is also right that the president should consider decisions made through the lens of our national and global security interests,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.

“He still believes that the no-fly zone will escalate and could provoke a war with Russia,” she continued. “I don’t think there are many supporters at the moment calling for this from Capitol Hill, but we certainly understand and acknowledge that this is still a call from President Zelenskiy.”
