“Your fight is our fight, your safety is our safety.” With these words, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Zelenskiy traveled to Belgium on Wednesday to seek support for Ukraine’s second winter of war at a meeting of NATO defense ministers. It was Zelenskiy’s first visit to NATO since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began. “This winter will be a big challenge for us,” Zelenskiy said. Ukraine needs even more air defense systems to protect its cities, critical infrastructure and port facilities from Russian airstrikes.
Kiev fears that Russia could again intensify its attacks on the country’s energy grid in the coming months, with the aim of ruining Ukraine economically and putting psychological pressure on its citizens. The supply of artillery systems and ammunition is also important to “expel the Russians from our country”, as Zelensky said.
