Zelenskyy calls for new sanctions against Russia

After the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was bombed, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for sanctions against Russia’s nuclear industry. “Anyone who creates nuclear threats to other peoples is definitely incapable of using nuclear technology safely,” Zelenskyy said in his video speech today. Specifically, he called for punitive measures against Russian state-owned Rosatom.

Kyiv and Moscow accused each other of bombing Europe’s biggest nuclear plant in the Russian-occupied city of Enerhodar. Ukraine has accused Russian troops of attacking the site of the nuclear plant. Selensykj spoke of an “act of terrorism”.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow, on the other hand, blamed Ukrainian soldiers for the bombing and announced that a block of power plants had to be partially closed. Furthermore, in Enerhodar the electricity and water supply failed in some districts.

Just a few days ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed concern about the situation around the plant in southern Ukraine. An inspection to verify technical safety is urgently needed, said IAEA chief Rafael Grossi. But it is currently very difficult for the IAEA to enter the war zone in Zaporizhia.
