Zoë Kravitz has shared her disapproval of Will Smith’s controversial night at the Oscars on Sunday, during which the actor came onstage at the ceremony and slapped Chris Rock after the comedian cracked a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith then returned to his seat before shouting, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth!”
The incident between Smith and Rock stunned audiences, both at the Dolby Theater and from home, as it was not immediately clear if the interaction was a staged sketch intended to be part of the show’s programming.
In two Instagram posts shared Tuesday afternoon, Kravitz posted captions alluding to the altercation, though the actress “Kimi” didn’t mention Rock or Smith by name.
Kravitz wrote, “Here’s a picture of my dress on the show where we seem to be attacking people on stage now.”
Less than an hour later, The Batman star shared another picture of her at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty with a bluntly similar message: “And here’s a picture of my dress at the post awards party – where we are Obviously they are yelling swear words and attacking people on stage now.”
In his subsequent acceptance speech for best actor, Smith apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees, although he did not address Rock during the evening. Smith later apologized to Rock on Monday afternoon and expressed regret over his actions.
“Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s health was too much for me and I reacted emotionally,” Smith wrote. “I want to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions were no indication of the man I want to be. In a world of love and kindness there is no place for violence.”
