Landing ban is being checked

The Italian Interior Ministry is examining a landing ban for rescue ships wanting to land in Italy. According to the Ministry of the Interior in Rome, the two ships “Ocean Viking” and “Humanity 1” do not comply with EU regulations. The landing ban could become a political issue.

The new Italian government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wants to do more to prevent migrants from leaving North Africa for southern Italy. “Rescuing people and the humanitarian approach is important, but we will do everything possible to avoid these sea voyages, which sometimes turn into deadly voyages,” said new Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, according to media.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday promised Italy a more determined fight against illegal immigration. Legal immigration channels, on the other hand, should be promoted. At the same time, according to the media, Tajani declared himself in favor of cooperation programs with African countries to slow down emigration to Europe.
