RT With UK energy prices set to hit record highs, an anonymous group called Don’t Pay UK has launched a campaign urging 1 million Britons to stop paying their energy bills on October 1, when prices are expected to rise. again.

At least 75,000 people have so far pledged to cancel their direct gas and electricity bills in protest at rising costs, according to campaign members. The British government is now calling the campaign “highly irresponsible,” The Independent reported on Thursday.

“This is a highly irresponsible message that ultimately only drives up prices for everyone else and affects personal creditworthiness,” a government spokesman told the newspaper.

Don’t Pay UK estimates that around 6.3 million British households will fall into fuel poverty by winter, with tens of millions of households suffering from ‘fuel stress’, meaning they will spend over 10% of their income just on utility bills.

The government said rising energy costs are being driven by rising global demand, the aftermath of the Covid19 pandemic and the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine.

However, record profits from energy companies like Centrica, which owns British Gas, have sparked public outrage and accusations that suppliers are benefiting from the crisis.

“Our politicians and the oil and gas companies have designed an energy system that only funnels money and profits up, regardless of the human cost,” a spokesman for Don’t Pay said, adding that record labels’ profit energy is unacceptable.
