The longer Jeff Saturday is at it, the better chance he has of winning

After shocking the NFL world and naming Jeff Saturday as the team’s interim head coach, Colts owner Jim Irsay had a clear sentiment that he had already unofficially decided to transfer the postseason job to Saturday. That didn’t stop a lot of candidates from applying for the job.

And so Irsay is apparently using the process to legitimize the unofficial decision to hire Saturday. The longer Saturday stays in the mix, the better chance he has of getting the job.

That’s the big takeaway from the news that there will be a second interview on Saturday. He’s in. And he can win it very well.

Some think it will boil down to Saturday and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. It is ultimately Irsay’s decision. If he wants to hire someone who hasn’t even gotten an interview with any of the other four teams looking for head coaches, that’s up to him.

And in the end it comes down to business. Even when the Colts fell apart and the show was on Saturday, people filled the stadium. That gives Irsay an opportunity to grab some hands-on experience on Saturday to make up for the experience he necessarily lacked – before gaining eight games of work experience by the end of the 2022 season.
