A few days before Joe Biden’s trip to Poland, Washington reaffirmed its support for Ukraine
“We can proudly say that our support for Ukraine remains unwavering and that (…) the international coalition supporting Ukraine is stronger than ever,” White House spokesman John Kirby said on Friday, reiterating, that the United States would support Kiev “for as long as it takes”.
That statement comes as US President Joe Biden is due to visit Poland, a country that borders Ukraine, next week. He will speak during a celebratory speech at the Warsaw Palace on Tuesday. Three days before the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, he wants “a message to [Vladimir] Putin as well as the Russian people,” said John Kirby.
Joe Biden must allay fears about the future of US support. The president, who plans to run again in 2024, lost control of either chamber of Congress in November to the Republican opposition, some of whom are threatening to question aid to Ukraine. However, without really shaking up the political consensus so far.
“We are determined to help Ukraine. Not for vague moral reasons (…), but because America’s fundamental interests are at stake,” said Republican Senator Mitch McConnell on Friday at the Munich Security Conference.
” THE [élus] Eccentrics attract media attention, but I think the vast majority, including Republicans in the House of Representatives, want to continue supporting Ukraine,” influential Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said in an interview with Agence France-Presse.
