Minsk.- Belarus will respond quickly and harshly to any aggression against it, President Aleksander Lukashenko said today during a session of the National Security Council.
Speaking about the project of the updated concept of the country’s security and the law on the people’s militia, the President added that elements of the Cold War have returned to the international agenda and therefore we need to be prepared.
The arms race and nuclear blackmail by the leaders of some Western countries are re-emerging, as well as a marked increase in the threats of aggressive nationalism and extremism in its various forms, Lukashenko stressed.
«The geopolitical interest of the Western hegemon in Belarus is a story of more than a century. But the technologies and methods of hybrid warfare are constantly being improved. And we have to look even further and anticipate events,” he said.
Earlier, the President stated that, given the development of events in the region and in the world, it is time to update the concept of national security.
According to the head of state, the current conception dates back to 2010, and now it is necessary to take into account that the neighboring countries of Belarus are members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and have modernized their strategic documents, threat assessment and digital technologies.
Meanwhile, the law on the Belarusian People’s Militia should define its legal basis, as well as recruitment and training procedures, the president said.
These units can be formed only for the purpose of defending Belarusian territory in wartime and will be a reserve for territorial defense.
