Guiana, Venezuela.- Modesty and an active business life are part of the contrasts of the Gran Sabana urbanization. In this corner of Ciudad Guiana, in the Venezuelan state of Bolívar, live more than 87,000 people whose health depends almost entirely on the work of 25 employees of the Cuban medical mission.
In the 500 square kilometers that once had the worst reputation of the municipality of Caroní, today harmony reigns, although the contrasts persist. It’s not surprising, then, that grateful people always show up at the doors of a comprehensive diagnostic center that few people know by name, UD 337, but by the name of the community that welcomes it: Core 8.
dr Alberto Chacón Remón is the coordinator of a healthcare facility that never closes its doors.
“The pathologies that we treat most often are related to arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, bronchial asthma and acute respiratory infections. With such high morbidity, the number of patients reached over 18,000 last year, about 50 a day. We saved more than 60 lives and made almost 20 deliveries in Apoyo Vital.”
The Antilles Brigade, composed of 25 specialists, watches over the health of the surrounding population, with a care activity that exceeds the physical limits of the CDI.
“We have 7 nurses, a sonographer, laboratory technicians, critical care physicians, a radiologist and community doctors. The clinical laboratory works every day without patient limitation; the intensive care unit and the medical emergency room work 24 hours a day; We have an oxygen bank and a human interaction system that allows us to reach the patient as quickly as possible.”
To keep a city healthy, you must earn the respect of its authorities and the affection of its citizens. In Core 8, according to Dr. Chacón counted as wins.
“We earned this respect through work. And we Cubans did it, with that doctor-patient relationship that nothing can replace. In doing so, we have won this city, a city, and a grateful community.”
The urbanization Gran Sabana, the mythical core 8 of the state of Bolívar, has contrast as its flag. Where humility goes with active trade, there is now health and peace for nearly 90,000 Venezuelans and 25 Cubans where violence once reigned.
“You come with fear of what is being said and if you look it’s a very calm population that protects and cares for us. And what we don’t want now is to leave Core 8. I have seen doctors who have completed their mission and walked away crying because they have fallen in love with Core 8 and its grateful people.”
