A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has hit Hatay province in southeastern Turkey. The announcement was made by the Kandilli earthquake control center in Istanbul on Monday. The epicenter was in Samandag district. The quake came two weeks after a devastating earthquake hit the region. In the early morning of February 6, a 7.7 magnitude tremor shook southeast Turkey and northern Syria, followed hours later by a second 7.6 magnitude tremor.
In both cases, the epicenter was in the province of Kahramanmaras, in southern Turkey. More than 47,000 people died in the earthquake, including at least over 41,000 in Turkey.
Millions of Syrians affected by the aftermath of the earthquake
In Syria, around 5,900 people died in connection with the devastating earthquakes. However, the number is only updated irregularly. In total, more than 47,000 people lost their lives in both countries.
According to the United Nations, 8.8 million people in Syria are affected by the aftermath of the earthquake disaster. “Most of them are expected to be in need of some form of humanitarian assistance,” Syrian Deputy UN Envoy Najat Rochdi wrote on Twitter on Sunday. In the days following the February 6 earthquake, activists and aid workers in rebellious areas of northwest Syria complained about a lack of UN assistance.
