Senegal: Voices are raised after Tunisian President’s comments on immigration

With our correspondent in Dakar, Birahim Toure

In an oral question to the government of Senegal, MP Guy Marius Sagna said he was “very concerned” about the situation of black Africans in Tunisia. This opposition elected official explains that “some are being evicted by their landlords, transportation drivers are refusing to let black people on buses, and students are refusing to join their establishment for fear of attack! The MP wonders what the Senegalese government is waiting for to summon the Tunisian ambassador to Dakar to condemn this situation.

Opponent and former Prime Minister Aminata Touré has tweeted a call for all African presidents to condemn the Tunisian president’s words, which he described as “hate”.

The CNTS, one of the largest trade union federations in Senegal, also condemned the arbitrary arrests of migrants from sub-Saharan countries. It calls for solidarity in defending their rights.

On the government side, it is silent for the time being.

A February 23 information note from the Senegalese embassy in Italy urges Senegalese travelers in transit or in transit through Tunisia to hand over the currencies they keep, which cannot exceed 1,500 euros, at the risk of being confiscated declare.
