Several London police officers have given up carrying weapons after being charged with the murder of a colleague who killed a young black man a year ago.
The accused police officer was brought to trial on Thursday for the murder of 24yearold Chris Kaba. The unarmed Kaba was killed by gunfire from a police officer in southwest London on September 5th.
According to police, the license plate of Kaba’s car was captured on camera, indicating it was a vehicle related to a firearms incident.
The majority of London’s 34,000 police officers are unarmed. Of those who carry weapons, “many are concerned” about the potential consequences of this prosecution, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.
“A number of officers” have decided to forego their firearms license “in order to have time to think about their position,” the spokesman continued.
According to the BBC, there would be more than 100 agents.
