No relief from dengue epidemic in Bangladesh

From January 1 to November 5, authorities reported 1,408 deaths from dengue fever and 279,904 people who contracted the disease caused by the bite of an infected mosquito, a DGHS statement said.

This year, 271,792 patients have been discharged and the rest remain hospitalized, 2,020 in Dhaka and 4,889 outside the capital.

An opinion article in The Dhaka Tribune newspaper questioned the measures taken so far to combat the disease, which they said were not enough to stop the epidemic in the country.

The publication states that dengue fever has always been a structural problem in Bangladesh and therefore suggests implementing an epidemiological approach to eradicate the disease once and for all.

Bangladesh ranked third in the number of dengue cases per capita among countries with the disease in the region this year, but retained first place with the highest mortality rate until October 22, the media highlighted.

It also highlights the need to take effective measures such as: Such as eliminating breeding grounds for mosquito transmission in communities, conducting door-to-door control measures and using insecticides in the areas.

It also notes that inadequate hospital staff, delayed diagnoses and other obstacles have undermined efforts to effectively combat the disease.
