Schengen Austria confirms agreement with Romania and Bulgaria

The legally binding text on “Schengen Air” has been sent to the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Austria confirmed the agreement with Romania and Bulgaria on “Schengen Air”, air entry without border control. As the Ministry of the Interior confirmed to APA on Saturday, a corresponding legally binding text was sent to the Spanish EU presidency on Friday evening. Romania announced the agreement days ago.

The agreement means that travelers from Romania and Bulgaria will no longer have to fly to other EU countries through international terminals in future. Passports are checked at the gate by the airlines with the support of the police.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, all EU member states must first agree to the agreement for implementation. The earliest possible date for the introduction of the regulation would be March 2024, as flight schedules will change this month. At the same time, the Ministry of the Interior noted that there are currently no negotiations and therefore no date regarding the full accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the borderless Schengen area.
