The first return flight of 2024 will arrive in Guatemala from the USA

The plane's arrival is scheduled for 9 a.m. local time, so relevant authorities are ready to give them initial attention, company spokesman Andrea Mena said.

He called for people not to risk their lives when making irregular trips to the northern country and stressed the importance of doing so with the appropriate documentation.

The spokesman revealed that there is a caravan of migrants that recently left Tapachula, Mexico, and therefore hopes to know the number of Guatemalans in it.

In view of their possible early arrival at the southern border of the United States, they announced that they are preparing to receive a new shipment of returnees.

The IGM, together with more than 14 institutions, facilities and international organizations, takes care of the care of this population group.

Last Friday, December 29, the last flight of 2023 arrived from the United States with 123 Guatemalans, which, together with those from Mexico, reached 55,302, a decrease of 15.4 percent compared to the previous period of the year .

However, statistics of nationals repatriated to Guatemala by air from the United States showed an increase of around 28.2 percent compared to those of 2022.

In addition, 4,730 returned by air from Mexico and 19,665 by land from the neighboring territory.

Of the total number of deportees in 2023, 31,267 were men, 13,631 were women, 7,959 were family units, and 125 boys and 77 girls were unaccompanied.

In Guatemala, entire families stand out, including unaccompanied children, willing to cross rivers, deserts, unknown cities and areas controlled by drug traffickers at least once.

Violence and impoverished economic conditions – experts say – are driving them to head north, as there are no government measures to combat these phenomena, particularly aimed at rural communities.

In addition, several local authorities agree to warn about the negative effects of climate change in the dry corridor, which covers 12 of the country's 22 departments.
