The film Snow Society, coming to Netflix this Thursday (Jan 4), tells the shocking story of a group of friends who survived the 1972 crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in a remote and difficulttoaccess location in the Andes. Inspired by the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci, the film by JA Bayona tells how 16 people withstood the accident, the weather conditions and hunger and fed on the human flesh of their deceased travel companions.

The plane flew from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Santiago, Chile, taking the Uruguayan amateur rugby team Old Christians from the Stella Maris school, as well as friends and family from the group, to a competition. In total, 45 people were on board and 29 survived the fall, but not everyone survived the 72 days of extreme cold until rescuers arrived.

Due to the extreme conditions on site, the authorities' search for survivors ended after just a few days. The group heard about this over the radio and decided to walk up the mountain in search of a nearby village. There they found a man calling for help. In the following days, a helicopter arrived to rescue her.

The 16 rescued were only able to survive because they fed on the bodies of those who had already died. The solution was found in a collective pact in which everyone agreed that if they did not resist, their bodies would be used for the survival of others.

Nominated for the 2024 Golden Globe in the Best International Film category and a potential Oscar contender in the same category, Snow Society reconstructs this story through the stories of all the survivors.

Among them is Carlitos Páez, who plays his own father in the film. In fact, the cast is made up of Uruguayan or Argentine actors who filmed in the snow, cold and hungry, to better understand the challenges faced by the survivors of Flight 571.
