Fourteen people were attending a prayer meeting at a house when the building was buried by a landslide on Thursday morning after several days of heavy rains in the mountainous gold-mining region of Davao de Oro province on the island of Mindanao.

Rescuers found 10 bodies, including those of five children from the same family, Rocris Idul, the municipality's disaster management officer, told AFP.

A man, a woman and a one-year-old girl were pulled alive from the mud. According to official information, the child was seriously injured while the adults suffered minor injuries.

One person is still missing. “We hope to find the last body as soon as possible,” the official said, adding that the search was complicated on Friday by more mudslides in the region.

“This morning a large mass of earth crumbled in the area, forcing us to suspend operations for 15 to 30 minutes,” Mr Idul added. “We cannot risk the lives of our rescuers.”
