The 77yearold former US president says he feels “sharper now than he did 20 years ago”
Former US President Donald Trump said on Saturday (January 27, 2024) that candidates for president of the country should be required to take a cognitive test to assess whether or not they can assume the office. The comment followed similar suggestions from his rival in the Republican primary, Nikki Haley.
The 52yearold former South Carolina governor has repeatedly questioned the ability of Trump (77 years old) and President Joe Biden (81 years old) to govern the US at their current ages. He also called for term limits and cognitive testing for politicians over 75.
She spoke about Trump's age, among other things, after he allegedly confused her with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. On January 19, the former president blamed the Republican for the attacks on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Haley has never held a position in the U.S. Congress and has not served there.
In response, the former governor said that the former president was “confused” and was “talking about something else.” She also questioned whether the country will really have “two 80yearolds running for president.”
Without mentioning Haley, Trump also said during a speech at a rally in Nevada that he feels “more enlightened now than he did 20 years ago.” The former president will face off against the state's former governor on February 8.
