The actress said she “can't believe” she is “alive” after struggling with addiction issues as a child. “In my personal life I was a failure and a broken person. Sometimes I can't believe I'm alive,” the talk show host told Us Weekly.
However, that is behind her. “Time is the greatest asset we have – it allows us to improve things, change things and bring light into a dark room. It's taken me my whole life to get to this point, but I'm so happy to be out of the prison of my mind,” she added.
The Charlie's Angels star also revealed how she finally beat her alcohol addiction. No special technique, no guru, but the will and the right moment to make your decision. “I’ve been drinking since I was nine years old, oh my God,” she said. And then one day I told myself I would never do it again.”
After the decision was made, Drew Barrymore stuck with it. “I have no deficiency. I have alcohol all over my house. I serve people drinks. It is an accepted decision. But it took me 35 years to get there. When I got there I was really exhausted,” she added.
Drew Barrymore, 48, also spoke about the efforts she has made to change the “bad girl” image she had of her life. “I thought I deserved bad things. Now I am raising two daughters. I can't do this to myself anymore. A bit like alcohol, I remove things one by one and say to myself, 'I can't carry you anymore. You're not good for me,'” she told the journalist.
The actress has two daughters, Olive (11) and Frankie (9), with her ex-husband Will Kopelman. The couple separated in 2016 after four years of marriage. Drew Barrymore previously opened up about her “painful” divorce, saying she feels “broken” after their split.
