SÃO PAULO AND BRASÍLIA Brazil will take advantage of the meeting of finance ministers and presidents of central banks of the member countries of Brazil G20 Next week I will propose a model for global taxation of the superrich, said the Finance Minister. Fernando Haddadto the newspaper O Globo.
“We will put on the table a proposal to tax the superrich based on the best available research,” Haddad said. “The wealth taxation and income progression agenda is essential to address the economic barriers of inequality and promote sustainable economic growth.”
According to the minister, the issue will be the focus of the third session of the meeting. “I still cannot elaborate on the proposal we will put forward, but I can confirm that we will continue to defend the flag of progressive taxation at the G20 summit,” he said.
In the first session, the debate is expected to focus on inequality, while the second session will be dedicated to the state of the global economy.
The fourth session of the meeting will deal with debt and financing of country development. According to Haddad, there is an expectation that Brazil can contribute to this discussion. “We also want to make a positive contribution to the global debt debate and for the first time give the perspectives of debtor countries a more central role,” he said.
The minister said he also wanted to “highlight” distortions that need to be corrected in the boards of international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
