Alberto Fernández is accused of corruption in Argentina

Former Argentine president suspected of embezzling funds from an allegedly illegal contract with an insurance company; Fernández denies wrongdoing

Former Argentine President Alberto Fernández was reported on Thursday (February 29, 2024) by the country's Ministry of State for alleged embezzlement of funds in an illegal purchase of insurance for government employees. Fernández denies the allegations.

In 2021, the politician signed a decree obliging state public entities to use services from the Nación Seguros insurance company from the Banco de la Nación Argentina. There are suspicions that the recruitment, which the MP described as irregular, was used to divert funds.

Argentine prosecutor Ramiro González charged Fernández, insurance broker Héctor Martínez Sosa and former Nación Seguros head Alberto Pagliano over the alleged embezzlement. It is up to the courts to decide whether or not to uphold the prosecutor's complaint.

In an interview with La Red radio this Thursday, Alberto Fernández, who left the presidency at the end of 2023, denied irregularities. “It seems incomprehensible to me that the complaint or the note that gave rise to the complaint […] I encourage everyone to come and look at my affidavits if anything has changed. Find out if my family got rich or if there is a frontman who benefited from it,” he said.
