Security Council concerned about deadly attack in Gaza

The United Nations body noted the opening of an investigation by Israel following reports from the United Nations Coordination Office (OCHA) that the incident involved the occupying power's forces.

More than 100 people were killed and several hundred more injured on Thursday, including people with gunshot wounds, UN-OCHA observed in an incident involving Israeli forces at a large gathering around an aid convoy. Humanitarian aid southwest of Gaza City, the text provided.

Council members emphasized the need to take all necessary measures to protect the population and civil infrastructure.

At the same time, they called on all parties to refrain from denying civilians in the Gaza Strip essential services and humanitarian assistance essential to their survival, in accordance with international humanitarian law.

The Council urged Israel to keep humanitarian border crossings open, to facilitate the opening of additional border crossings to meet major needs, and to support the rapid and safe delivery of aid throughout the Gaza Strip.

They also warned of grave concern after humanitarian organizations estimated this week that 2.2 million people in the enclave would face alarming levels of acute food insecurity.

The members of the Council demanded that the parties enable and facilitate the immediate, rapid, safe, sustainable and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance throughout the Gaza Strip, in accordance with resolutions approved by the Organization.

The aforementioned attack was reported on Al-Rashid Street in Gaza City on Thursday as the military attacked thousands of people desperate for food.

According to the Wafa news agency, the occupying forces and their tanks opened machine gun fire on thousands of citizens in the northern strip who were waiting for the arrival of trucks carrying humanitarian aid.

The Israeli military said in a statement that the shooting claimed only 10 lives and estimated the rest were due to the onslaught of the crowd.

However, this version was rejected by the Palestinians, who denounced the new massacre.

The crime is part of the genocidal war carried out by the authorities of this country against our people and which bears full responsibility for the incident, said the Palestinian Presidency.
