A Short Guide to the Perfect Voter

After 36 days of campaigning, Quebec voters are invited to choose their MP today. Here’s a little guide to help you navigate this Election Day.

Required criteria for voting

  • be 18 years or older
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be a Quebec resident since at least April 3, 2022
  • Be on the electoral roll (you can check your registration on the Chief Electoral Officer of Quebec’s website)
  • are not under the Board of Trustees or have lost their right to vote
  • Listen to Richard Martineau’s live broadcast every day at 8:00 am. 45 over QUB radio :

October 3rd, D Day

  • Polling stations are open from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • You have been sent an ‘information card’ detailing the address and number of your polling station and the candidates running in your constituency.
  • Four hours to vote: The law requires employers to allow four consecutive hours of voting between 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on election day (without a pay cut or other sanction) under penalty of a fine.
  • On September 25th and 26th it was possible to vote in advance.

Bring documents to vote

You must have one of these IDs with you:

  • Quebec driver’s license
  • Quebec health insurance card
  • Canadian passport
  • Indian Status Certificate
  • Canadian Forces Identity Card

Having trouble voting?

  • If you have vision problems, the staff at the polling station will help you, whether by marking or explaining the ballot paper.
  • Posters with photos of the candidates are put up in the polling stations to make it easier for people with reading difficulties to exercise their right to vote.

How to vote?

  • When you go to your constituency office, use the pencil provided to mark the circle opposite the candidate of your choice on the ballot.

Voting in six steps

  • Go to the designated table, say your name and address and show ID.
  • Go behind the polling booth with the ballot paper given to you by the polling staff.
  • Put a cross, tick or other mark in the circle next to the name of the candidate of your choice.
  • Refold your ballot and return to the table.
  • Tear off the section of your ballot along the dotted line and give it to the staff.
  • Place your ballot in the ballot box.
