The wife of Rex Heuermann, who is accused of killing three women whose remains were found on a Long Island beach road more than a decade ago, filed for divorce on Wednesday, her attorney said.
Her attorney, Robert Macedonio, told CBS News that Asa Ellerup was ordered to leave the couple’s home with only their clothes on their backs and was not allowed to return as investigators continued to search the home. Investigators confiscated all of the home’s electronics, including those belonging to her and the couple’s two adult children.

News of the divorce comes as neighbors and a woman who has been with Heuermann share their chilling encounters with him.
Nicole Brass, 34, told CBS she had an awkward encounter with Heuermann years ago. She said she dated the alleged serial killer years after the Gilgo Beach murders and said he was “excited” to speak out about the killings.
“He was very detail oriented and didn’t just seem like a real crime fiction fan. It felt like everyone who talked about it was replaying it in their head. He looked excited. That piqued your interest. He sat up straighter and relaxed his body. He seemed really excited to talk about it,” she said.
Neighbor Etienne Devilliers said his wife caught Heuermann peeking over the fence while sunbathing and asked him to come out. “He obeyed and didn’t react, he didn’t fight and he didn’t get violent … I never saw a hint of violence from the guy,” he said.
Heuermann, an architect, was charged with the murders of the three women last week and is still suspected of a fourth death, a prosecutor said.
He pleaded not guilty and remains in custody under suicide surveillance. Police say his wife and two children are “groping in the dark about his double life”.
The bodies of Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman were discovered along a 400meter stretch of the Ocean Parkway. They were among ten human remains found on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach in 2010 and 2011, a chance discovery while authorities were searching for another missing woman.
That woman, Shannan Gilbert, was found dead in 2011 in another area, a coastal marsh, where Suffolk County Police said it was a drowning accident, which her family has denied.
The Gilgo Beach findings have become a longstanding mystery in New York as to who is responsible for her death. While authorities don’t think it’s likely that one person is responsible for all of the remains, they do believe that the presence of a few bodies side by side indicates the act of a serial killer.
The longunsolved murders were the subject of numerous reports on the CBS series 48 Hours and the 2020 Netflix film Lost Girls.
Investigators are working to connect Heuermann, 59, to the death of a fourth person, Maureen BrainardBarnes, prosecutors said.
Police officers who searched his home in recent days were seen taking away boxes of materials including more than 200 firearms, a filing cabinet and a computer, as well as a large doll in a glass case and other household items.
Heuermann lived for decades in the house across the bay where the remains were discovered.
