Almost a month of rain in an hour in Longueuil!

The equivalent of a month’s rain fell in one hour in Longueuil on Tuesday afternoon, according to Mayor Catherine Fournier.

The city council shared on its social media an assessment of the intense rainy episode that hit southern Quebec.

“We received almost 70mm of water in the Longueuil area between 5pm and 6pm, while the *monthly* average at this time of year is 80mm,” she wrote on Facebook.

Ms Fournier indicated that 125 addresses (22 in Greenfield Park, 12 in Saint-Hubert and 91 in Vieux-Longueuil) suffered damage related to the sewer rehabilitation.

“But that number is expected to increase,” she said.

36 people are expected to be assisted by the Red Cross after the flooding.

The mayor of Longueuil used this report to remind that episodes of this type of torrential rain could increase due to climate change.

“As a city, we have a responsibility to increase the resilience of our infrastructure to cope with this reality and we aim to do that by adopting a climate change adaptation plan, which is currently being developed, as per the commitment of our team, ” She said.
