The Chinese medicine expert explains how the shape and markings of your nails tell you something about your health

An expert in Traditional Chinese Medicine has revealed what your nails say about your health – down to every single mark.

The Eastern Philosophy, a small Asian-owned company specializing in herbal medicine, frequently shares educational videos about health on TikTok, including a video on how to identify your health condition simply by looking at your nails.

The now-viral video has amassed nearly 400,000 views and shows how the small business’s supporters can identify health concerns and decide if they need to see a doctor.

“What your nails tell you about your health, according to the Daoist tradition of body reading,” the video reads.

How downward-curving nails could indicate respiratory problems

In the video, the small Asian-owned business reveals that if your nails curl down, it could indicate breathing problems.

Also known as club nails, these types of nails can be the first sign of a serious health problem.

Nails that curl down could indicate that you are suffering from respiratory problems.

Common health problems in patients with downward curved nails include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, asthma or even lung cancer.

The nail bed usually begins by softening before curving.

Nails that curve upwards could mean you have liver or lung problems

If your nails are curled up, you’re likely to develop liver or lung problems.

According to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, upturned nails are seen in 35 percent of people with non-small cell lung cancer and four percent of people with small cell lung cancer.

It adds that upward finger clubbing is gradual.

First, the nail base becomes soft and the skin next to the nail bed is often shiny.

The next thing you’ll notice is that your nails are more curved than normal when you look at them from the side.

Finally, the ends of your fingers often grow and swell, which is a result of fluid building up in the soft tissues of the fingers.

What the vertical and horizontal lines on your nails reveal about your stomach and nerve problems

The TikTok then explained that if your nails have vertical lines on them, it could indicate you have stomach or nerve problems.

According to Healthline, fingernail ridges are often a sign of other serious health problems.

Many people with vertical lines on their nails also have multiple sclerosis, or MS, a disease that affects the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves that make up the central nervous system.

And if the lines on your nails are more horizontal than vertical, it could mean you have “possible gut problems.”

If the horizontal ridges are on the wider part of your nail, it can indicate the presence of IBS or celiac disease.

The presence of horizontal ridges is often referred to as Beau’s line and is usually a symptom of a serious medical condition.

In addition to intestinal problems, horizontal lines can also indicate kidney disease.

Big nail moons could mean high blood pressure

“A nail moon that is too large indicates a high risk of blood pressure,” revealed the small Asian-owned company.

The crescent-shaped base of your nail is called the lunulae and is considered too big if it takes up a third or more of your fingernail.

It often indicates problems with the cardiovascular system, cardiac arrhythmias and high blood pressure.

According to the CDC, high blood pressure, or high blood pressure, increases your risk of other heart problems, such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

Most people develop high blood pressure because of their diet, lifestyle, or a medical condition, but the basis of your nails may be able to tell you whether or not you should make that doctor’s appointment for high blood pressure.

A lack of nail moons — or ones that are too small — could mean you have low blood pressure

Small nail moons can mean you have low blood pressure

Conversely, small nail moons could mean you have low blood pressure.

A lunula that is too small is one that can barely be seen behind the cuticle.

Small nail moons indicate low blood pressure and circulatory problems and are often a sign of a weak immune system, poor metabolism or a lack of iron and B12.

If your nail moon is separated from the rest of your nail by transverse lines, this could indicate a possible development of diabetes.

The absence of a nail moon can mean the presence of extreme fatigue and low immunity.

The small business added, “Nail moons can decline because of staying up too late, poor digestion, anemia, and low thyroid function.”

According to Healthline, missing nail moons aren’t always a cause for concern, as they could simply be hidden under the cuticles or the skin at the base of the fingers.

However, the absence of lunulaes can also be a sign of depression or malnutrition.

If you’re experiencing fatigue or general weakness and have noticed your nail moons are missing, you should make an appointment to see your doctor, according to Healthline.
