People displaced by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine wait for food and a place to sleep outside the capital, Kyiv. Others who have fled to Poland are struggling in the cold after crossing the border.

Five weeks into the war, thousands are dead and nearly 4 million Ukrainians have fled the country. Despite the risky evacuation, many residents could not bear to leave their pets behind – including a wounded brown dog in Poland.

A resident covers the broken windows of her home in the port city of Mikolajiv after Russian attacks blasted a gaping hole in a nine-story government building there, killing at least 12 people.

Ukrainian soldiers near the western city of Lviv are conducting training exercises, firing their weapons at makeshift targets. Some others are taking up positions in ditches north of Kyiv, where Russia’s advance has been held up for weeks.
