In 2022, around 109,000 asylum claims were made in Austria. This is a big increase compared to 2021. The majority of asylum claims have come from people from Afghanistan. The recognition rate for asylum applications in Austria is now just 15.6%.
AUSTRIA. 108,781 asylum claims were made in Austria last year. In the previous year – 2021 – there were around 39,900 asylum requests. This is the result of a statistic that the Ministry of the Interior published in some areas immediately after the elections in Lower Austria.
Most asylum claims from Afghanistan
Thus, the majority of asylum applications were made by people from Afghanistan, a total of 24,241. India comes in second with 19,504 asylum claims, followed by Syria with 19,150, Tunisia with 12,667, Morocco with 8,471, Pakistan with 7,643 and Turkey with 5,132.
Asylum seekers from these countries – with the exception of Syria and Afghanistan – hardly stand a chance of receiving protection status. According to the Interior Ministry, the number of asylum seekers from Tunisia and India has dropped to zero after the end of visa-free travel for people from those countries.
Austria is generally not the destination country
But Austria was not the destination country for most people from India or Tunisia. Experts have emphasized this repeatedly in the past. Around 41,000 people left Austria before the end of the asylum process. Therefore, the number of asylum requests is not so strongly reflected in basic services.
The recognition rate in Austria is now very low. 78,796 asylum applications were rejected last year. This puts the recognition rate at just 15.6%. The procedures were also accelerated: in 2022 they lasted 3.5 months.
As reported by the Ministry of the Interior, there were fewer asylum applications in January 2023 than in January 2022. According to the ministry, this is also due to the measures taken. However, numbers were not provided.
