BE is calling for an immediate end to the nonresident tax regime to avoid a stampede "tax free"

The Left Bloc announced that it would propose a moratorium in parliament to immediately abolish the tax regime for nonresidents and insisted on a ban on the sale of houses to nonresidents. These initiatives were presented by the coordinator of the Bloco de Esquerda, Mariana Mortágua, at a press conference in which she accused Prime Minister António Costa of representing the government’s “capitulation” in the face of the severe housing crisis.

The number of nonhabitual residents eligible for tax breaks skyrocketed in 2022. Costa announced a brake for 2024

The Left Bloc’s proposals will be debated on the 25th as part of a possible agenda of this political force and will be voted on the same day, i.e. before the debate on the 2024 state budget.

Addressing journalists, Mariana Mortágua warned of the consequences resulting from the fact that the Prime Minister announced on Monday, in an interview with TVI and CNN/Portugal, with deferred effect, the end of the tax regime for nonhabitual residents.

“If nothing is done and if a moratorium is not applied from now on preventing access to the tax system for nonhabitual residents, then we will as the Prime Minister did on Monday see a fiscal freefall in registrations for the… Promote the scheme without habitual residence in the period between the announcement and the end of the scheme. That’s what happened with the golden visas, and that’s what happened with the measure that limited the increase in rents for new contracts. And this is what will happen with the regime of nonordinary residents,” warned the coordinator of the Bloco de Esquerda.

According to Mariana Mortágua, “the mere announcement by the government, a warning to shipping, becomes a promotion and a call on the part of the Prime Minister for anyone who wants to benefit from this regime to which they will have access for ten years.”

An appeal, says Mariana Mortágua, to “join quickly until the regime is eliminated.”
