In the gaming laptop market, we are more familiar with Lenovo’s Legion range, but the Chinese manufacturer recently launched the LOQ range, which maintains performance but leaves out some aesthetic details. A gaming laptop that prefers to limit itself to the essentials
As suggested above, the Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 is a laptop that forgoes aesthetic bells and whistles to keep the price down. So we have a common, if not very common, housing. This plastic bowl with the LOQ logo is not a beauty model and is difficult to recognize at first glance. The equipment offers a decent set with a USB-C port, three USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, an Ethernet port and a jack port. It’s a shame about the lack of the 2.1 standard on the HDMI port and an SD card reader.
On the 15.6-inch screen side we have an IPS LCD panel in Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) that supports a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz. Unsurprisingly, the colorimetry is rather poor with a coverage of 60% of the sRGB space and 42.7% of the DCI-P3 space. The brightness doesn’t do any wonders either, as it can hardly reach the manufacturer’s promise of 350 cd/m². An acceptable sacrifice to be able to get hold of such a configuration for less than 1,000 euros.
Monster power in the chassis
There are several configurations of the Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 and this one features an RTX 4050 graphics card. This is one of Nvidia’s latest generation GPUs and its performance is comparable to that of the RTX 3060, in short, this graphics card can run all current games in Full HD. However, the latest hits require some compromises in graphics to maintain good fluidity, but can still benefit from Nvidia technologies such as ray tracing and DLSS 3.
The processor is an Intel Core i7-13620H with 10 cores, which can reach a turbo frequency of 4.9 GHz. To ensure multitasking, it is supported by 16 GB of DDR5 RAM. For a laptop under 1,000 euros, it’s very good. However, thermal management is not perfect due to the plastic housing, which makes heat dissipation difficult, and the ventilation, which can be very loud. Finally, the battery life in office use is only 4 to 5 hours, which is not surprising for a gaming notebook.
