Benedict Cumberbatch replied to Sam Elliott

“These people still exist in our world.”

Actor Sam Elliott, who recently starred in the Yellowstone 1883 spin-off, recently called the film a “piece of shit” in an interview with Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.

“That’s what all those damn cowboys looked like in that movie,” Elliott said, comparing the movie’s portrayal of cowboys to the Chippendale dancers. They run around in pants and no shirts. There are all these hints of homosexuality throughout the film.”

In a recent interview with the BAFTA Film Sessions (via Digital Spy), Power of the Dog star Benedict Cumberbatch responded to Elliot’s comments and criticism.

“I’m trying very hard not to say anything about a very strange reaction that happened on a radio podcast the other day,” Benedict said of Elliot’s comments.

Noting that he did not hear Elliott’s comments first hand, Benedict said that “someone really took offense at … the West being portrayed in this way. These people still exist in our world.”

“Whether it’s on our doorstep, or it’s down the road, or it’s someone we meet in a bar, pub, or sports field, there’s aggression, anger, frustration, and an inability to control or know who you are at the moment when it harms this person and, as we know, harms others.

“There’s nothing wrong with looking at a character to understand the root causes of it,” he continued. “It’s a very specific case of suppression, but also of intolerance for the true identity that Phil is, which he can’t fully be.”

“The more we look under the hood of toxic masculinity and try to uncover its root causes, the more likely we are to deal with it when it occurs in our children.”
