Vogue helped explain more about this short film.
The clip is based on the classic 1966 film “A Man and a Woman”. Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant star in this French film.
You play two widowed parents who meet at their children's boarding school. They soon realize that they are attracted to each other.
Chanel's short tribute recreates the scene in which the two sit opposite each other in a hotel restaurant in Deauville.
In the original scene, director Claude Lelouch placed a handbag – Aimée's own Chanel bag – on the table between them.
This happens again in the Pitt/Cruz film.
In Lelouch's original film, Trintignant asks for the room, but here Cruz does, giving the woman strength as she takes the first step towards the bedroom.
As Inez & Vinoodh explained: “The complicity between the two women – which is a central theme in everything we do for Chanel – reinforces Penélope’s decision to take this first step.”
Cruz raved about the film to Vogue.
“I've seen it many times, but only at home alone,” said the Volver actress.
“And I think Inez & Vinoodh have done something incredible.” “A Man and a Woman” is one of my favorite films ever and Claude Lelouch is one of my favorite directors.
“And Anouk Aimée has always been one of my favorite actresses. And she is such a beauty, such a fashion icon.
“So to be able to be part of this beautiful homage – to the film, to Claude, to the Deauville Festival, to the relationship between Deauville and Chanel and between Gabrielle and Deauville…” There are so many layers. And they are all so beautiful. And they are also truthful.”
