In his message for the relaunch of this popular place for meeting, reflection and debate, Teillier referred to this year’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the coup that plunged the country into a dark age.
“For a long time it seemed like there was no hope of restoring democracy or stopping the dictatorship’s genocide, but the Chilean people have come forward, a process that is still inconclusive because the wound is still open and a coexistence of more social justice needs to be consolidated,” he said.
According to the leader who survived the struggle against the military regime, the new generations need to know the historical truth, carefully weigh what fascism means and the consequences of what happened on September 11, 1973.
In many parts of the world, he said, this commemoration is being prepared and Chile must gain an international presence, especially those who have joined the tremendous wave of solidarity that saved lives and contributed to the defeat of the dictatorship.
“There are here, he pointed out in reference to a group of guests, representatives of countries who have really supported us and to whom we will always be grateful.”
The 50th anniversary of the coup against President Salvador Allende will be a moment of celebration and tribute to the victims who, in many ways, fought for a return to the democratic channel, said the PCCh President.
“Many protagonists of this gigantic resistance to the dictatorship are not present, but they will be in every place and corner of this festival of hugs, which welcomes them with affection and admiration,” concluded the experienced Chilean communist leader.
The event was attended by representatives of government, political and social organizations, members of Chile’s accredited diplomatic corps and special guests.
