Chinese fighter jet intercepts US plane in South China Sea

The events show an increase in military tensions in the region as the US steps up provocations against China.

247 — A Chinese fighter jet armed with four airtoair missiles intercepted a US Navy P8A Poseidon approaching the wing of the US plane 150m above the South China Sea, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“American planes, this is the PLA Air Force [Exército de Libertação do Povo]. You are approaching Chinese airspace. Keep a safe distance or you’ll be intercepted,” warned a Chinese military ground station previously relayed to the P8.

According to US officials, encounters like Friday’s over the South China Sea are now almost commonplace and are becoming increasingly dangerous, the WSJ reports.

In December, the United States accused a Chinese fighter jet of flying within 20 feet of a US reconnaissance plane over the South China Sea.

PROCEED TO RECOMMENDATIONS

The events reveal an increase in military tensions in the region as the US steps up provocations against China such as over the Taiwan issue. Captain Will Toraason, commander of US Navy surveillance aircraft in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, said “the longterm trend is becoming increasingly aggressive” by Chinese fighter pilots.
