Climate change critics have accused Taylor Swift of using a gas-guzzling private jet during the Australian leg of her Eras tour

Taylor Swift has sparked a wave of criticism online for the extraordinary carbon footprint she created using a private jet during the Australian leg of her Eras Tour.

The 33-year-old megastar flew to Australia on her Bombardier Global 6000 earlier this month and then traveled on the luxury aircraft between Melbourne and Sydney to continue her tour.

Last week, Swift also sent the plane to Hawaii to pick up boyfriend Travis Kelce and transported the soccer star to Sydney so he could watch her perform.

On Tuesday morning, the “Shake It Off” hitmaker and her entourage flew from Australia to Singapore on the same plane.

Australian critics have since criticized Swift – who previously called climate change a “terrible situation” plaguing the world – for using a gas-guzzling jet rather than flying a commercial flight.

'If [climate change] is a disaster, why are celebrities allowed to fly around the world in their private jets? “Taylor Swift seems to use her car like a car,” one user wrote on X.

“Remember Taylor Swift sent her private jet from Sydney to Hawaii to pick up her boyfriend and bring him back to Sydney… so they could cuddle and kiss in front of an audience,” another added.

A single private jet emits as much carbon dioxide in an hour as an average human does in an entire year, with private flights being 14 times more polluting (per passenger) than a commercial airliner.

A spokesperson for Swift recently said that the pop star offset its carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits that support verified projects that help reduce global emissions to “protect vulnerable ecosystems.”

They told that they are working to reduce the carbon emissions of their jets by traveling less frequently than in previous years.

“Before the tour began in March 2023, Taylor purchased more than double the carbon credits required to offset all tour travel,” the spokesperson said.

But critics argue that buying carbon credits gives wealthy people “permission to pollute” while continuing their carbon-intensive lifestyles.
