This comes after Sue Nicholls paid tribute to her Coronation Street co-star John Savident following his death aged 86.

The actor was known for his booming voice when he played butcher Fred Elliott in the ITV soap from 1994 to 2006.

A statement from his agent to the PA news agency said: “We are sad to announce the death of actor John Savident, who died on Wednesday 21 February. He was a beloved husband and father of two children and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.'

Sue, 80, plays Audrey Roberts in Coronation Street and memorably told Fred she wished she married him on the day he tied the knot with Bev Unwin (Susie Blake).

In a statement she said: “I am very sad to hear of John's death. “My memories of working with you, dear John, on the road are and always will be a joy.

“God bless you and thank you for being in my life. Love to you and your friends and family.”

Iain MacLeod, ITV's executive producer for Continuing Drama, said: “Everyone on Coronation Street is deeply saddened to learn of the death of John Savident.” As Fred Elliott, John firmly established himself in the pantheon of Coronation Street greats.

“His unparalleled comic timing, coupled with a deep pathos that came from his outstanding dramatic ability, made Fred an unforgettable, iconic character who brought great joy to audiences for many years.”
