In Mexico City, the Costa Rican delegation took part in the 50th meeting of coordinators, which also negotiated the texts of the declarations to be signed by the Heads of State and Government at the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).
For the event in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Costa Rica also proposed addressing issues such as climate change, disaster management and transnational organized crime.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the delegation stressed the need to ensure and strengthen democratic processes in the region, highlighting the major challenges it currently faces and their future impact on the development of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The delegation for Costa Rica consisted of Ambassador Gina Guillén Grillo, Director General of Foreign Policy, and Minister Adviser Antonio Alarcón, Head of the Department of International Organizations.
Ambassador Guillén highlighted the important role of Celac in shaping dialogues with extra-regional partners such as the European Union and China and the importance of further developing the agreements reached at the Celac-European Union Summit in July 2023, mainly through initiatives such as Global Gateway.
The meeting also discussed ways to link the Celac agenda with some G20 activities during the Brazilian presidency.
The delegations gathered in Mexico City also analyzed, among other things, the regional situation in areas such as health, education, science, technology and innovation, energy transition and space cooperation.
The Costa Rican delegation held bilateral meetings with the delegations of Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to discuss the regional integration strategy in the continent's political dialogue and coordination forums.
He promoted the region's participation with the entire membership in the “High Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change,” which will take place in San Jose next June.
Celac is a regional coordination and integration mechanism established on December 3, 2011 with the aim of advancing unity and political, economic, social and cultural integration with an integrative and cooperative perspective, focusing on the areas of common interest .
