In Germany, the weekend was marked by protests against the extreme right. At the end of a new day full of mobilizations across the country, the organization “Friday for Future” and the civil alliance Campact, which are among the organizers of the movement, announced on Sunday, January 21, that around 1.4 million people have mobilized since Friday Hundreds of demonstrations had gathered.

This popular movement of rare proportions follows the revelation by the press in early January of a meeting of extremists in Potsdam, at which a plan for the mass expulsion of foreigners or people of foreign origin was discussed in the presence of elected representatives from the right-wing extremist party AfD (Alternative for Germany). The affair has reignited debate over a possible ban on the party, which continues to rise in the polls.

“The Nazis outside”

On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated again against the AfD and its radical ideology, especially in Munich (South), where the demonstration had to be interrupted due to the influx of demonstrators. During this phase of mobilization, the largest gathering took place in the Bavarian capital. Police estimated the crowd at around 100,000 people. During the parades, some people waved signs saying “Nazis out” or “Never again, it’s now.”

The turnout on Sunday in the Reichstag forecourt in Berlin was also huge; according to the police, RBB radio estimated 100,000 people, and according to the organizers 350,000 people.

According to estimates by the ARD broadcaster, around 250,000 people had already mobilized in dozens of cities nationwide on Saturday.
