“It was with mixed feelings that I decided to retire at the end of the season. Leaving the house I’ve owned for 50 years gives me a good shot of the blues. But that feeling quickly fades when I think of the chance to do a wonderful job with colleagues who genuinely believe in the importance of public service. I never entered the office backwards. I’m leaving with a smile on my face,” Michel Désautels said in a press release.
Michel Désautels began his journalistic career in 1972 with Radio Canada at the Toronto station. From 1977 he moderated special information programs in Montreal, such as major election evenings.
On Radio-Canada television, he co-hosted the weekly Le Point magazine with Jean-François Lépine, Daniel Pinard and Gil Courtemanche.
Michel Désautels is also the author of three books, namely Pierre Gauvreau – Les trois temps d’une paix (1997), the novels Smiley (1998) and Next week, I want to die (2000).
Since autumn 2013 he has hosted the Désautel on Sundays, which he will leave at the end of this 10th season. For 4 years he took part in the morning show Tout un matin every day.
“Michel Désautels is literally a radio giant. He is recognized for his phenomenal career, immense talent as a mediator, communicator and journalist in international, national or regional politics, sports and culture. He is erudite in everything, and also has a phenomenal memory. Throughout his career, public broadcaster listeners could appreciate his warm voice and great talent as a popularizer. A passionate defender of public service broadcasting, he will be missed by all of us,” said Director General for Information Luce Julien.
