The activists, who are already filling classrooms at the University of Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts, are calling for a radical change in climate, social and educational policies. “We take advantage of this space so that we, as students, can meet, network and discuss complaints inside and outside the university. In order not to faint in isolation, it is important to organize ourselves and take a stand against the continuous colonial and imperial exploitation of lands, people and ecosystems”, defend the squatters.

Demand: More transparency and democracy at the university

Angewandte students make specific demands of the university. From Angewandte, which calls itself the “University for the Future”, they demand transparency about concrete steps towards the desired climate neutrality by 2030, democratic teaching formats, as well as the disclosure and renegotiation of the university’s financial dependencies on “anti-future corporations”. 🇧🇷

The first item on the agenda is the lecture “Lectures for the Future” by Ulrich Brand, a university professor of international politics, who, according to the activists, supports their claims. At the beginning of the occupation of the university headquarters, Brand gave a lecture in room C1 and there participated in a panel discussion.

Auditorium occupants want to continue

University occupations must continue

With the occupation, students also want to show solidarity with the “Erde Brennt” movement, the international movement “End Fossil: Occupy!” and the protests in Iran and Afghanistan. Only on Monday did the occupants of the University of Vienna confirm that they would continue and want to continue their protest even after a possible eviction from the C1 lecture hall at the University of Vienna.
