Egypt: A swimmer attacked by a shark struggles in a pool of blood and dies

A tourist bathing in the Red Sea in Egypt was attacked by a shark. Shocked spectators tried to drive the animal away. The victim died shortly after the attack.

Onlookers witnessed a horror scene in Egypt on Friday July 1 at the seaside resort of Sahl Hasheesh near Hurghada. A 68-year-old Austrian tourist was swimming in the Red Sea when she was attacked by a shark. She was bitten in a leg and an arm.

In a video posted to social media, we see the swimmer struggling to reach the beach amidst water that has turned blood red. Tourists watching the scene from a pier somehow tried to keep the shark away, unfortunately too late. In particular, we see a man throwing a rope into the water to try to help the victim.

Warning: The video may offend the sensibilities of the most vulnerable.

The tourist died of cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to hospital, according to local media. She was married to an Egyptian and lived there.

Russian vacationers complain about the lack of lifeguards on the beach in the video, according to The Time of Israel daily.

Shark attacks are relatively rare in Egypt, with the last fatality in the Red Sea dating back to 2018.
