The guilty SUV driver was traveling north on the southern stretch of the Laurentian Highway before colliding head-on with another vehicle near Boulevard du Lac around 9:30 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle that was going in the right direction, a man in his 40s, was transported in critical condition to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, while the at-fault driver sustained minor injuries.
A blood sample was taken from the 50-year-old, Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokeswoman Geneviève Bruno said, adding that the highway was closed for much of the night.
SQ investigators and collision site reconstruction technicians were dispatched to the scene of the tragedy to attempt to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
The suspect, for his part, is expected to appear at the courthouse later in the day to face charges of driving and causing death, it was added.
